European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced plans to strengthen joint energy purchasing across the European Union as rising gas and diesel prices increase pressure on member states and consumers.
The European Union (EU) has attracted over €1.2 trillion ($1.3 trillion) in sustainable investment since 2021, with more than €320 billion invested in 2025 alone, as the bloc’s green finance framework supports clean energy, decarbonisation and energy security.
The European Union (EU) imported €11.4 billion worth of green energy products in 2025, including solar panels, biofuels and wind turbines, while exports totalled €4.6 billion, according to the latest trade figures, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.
The European Union faces potential gas shortages in winter 2026–2027, with storage at a record seasonal low of 72.4 per cent on October 3. The bloc may need to cut gas demand by 7 per cent, or 14 billion cubic metres, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
