Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new clean electricity strategy aimed at doubling the country’s power grid capacity by 2050 and lowering energy costs for households.
Speaking in Ottawa, Carney said the plan responds to
challenges including US tariffs, rising energy prices and climate change,
noting that changing global conditions require new policy approaches.
The strategy calls for greater use of hydroelectric,
nuclear, wind and solar power, alongside natural gas, carbon capture and
geothermal energy.
Implementation costs for the energy infrastructure projects
are expected to exceed one trillion Canadian dollars, equivalent to around $730
billion.
Carney said the scale and urgency of the programme would
require a more flexible approach beyond traditional frameworks.
