Econowind, a Dutch specialist in wind-assisted ship propulsion, is expanding into the deepsea market with the launch of its new 5-series VentoFoil.
This larger, 30-metre
steel suction wing system builds on the proven technology of the company’s 3-series
model and is designed specifically for oceangoing vessels.
The 5-series targets
shipowners and operators seeking practical solutions to reduce fuel consumption
and meet tightening environmental regulations.
Econowind has already
sold more than 150 suction wings across various vessel types, gaining strong
traction in shortsea and regional shipping.
With this new model,
the company aims to tap into the greater fuel-saving potential offered by
larger ships operating on long-haul routes.
The first 5-series
VentoFoil will be installed on a Boomsma Shipping vessel, marking its
commercial debut and signalling continued confidence in the technology as a
means of improving sustainability and efficiency.
To support its
expansion, Econowind is establishing production capabilities in the Far East,
closer to major shipbuilding hubs. This will facilitate integration into
newbuild projects and streamline delivery.
Using boundary-layer
suction technology, the VentoFoil generates additional wind-powered thrust,
reducing engine load.
The system is designed
to be practical, with minimal deck impact, bridge-controlled operation, and the
ability to tilt when required.
“As a returning customer, we are pleased to
use VentoFoils again on our vessels, now in the form of the 5-series,” said
Johan Boomsma of Boomsma Shipping. “Wind propulsion has proven its value both
economically and environmentally. With high fuel prices adding to the urgency,
this is a logical next step for us. Energy efficiency is high on our agenda,
which is why our eight newbuild vessels will be all delivered wind-ready. The
first, Frisian Future, will enter service in May.”
“The 3-series has shown that our technology works in daily operations,” said Chiel de Leeuw, Chief Commercial Officer of Econowind. “With the 5-series, we are bringing that proven concept into the deepsea market.” -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
