Bahrain begins term as United Nations Security Council member

The Kingdom of Bahrain has begun its term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2026-2027.

Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei, Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, attended a flag-raising ceremony at the UN headquarters to mark the start of the term. It is the second time in Bahrain’s history that the kingdom has served on the Security Council, reported BNA.

The 15-member Security Council has five permanent members - Britain, China, France, Russia and United States - and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.

Five non-permanent members are replaced every year.

On the key milestone, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the Kingdom of Bahrain was proud of the official assumption of non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term which marks the country’s second membership in nearly three decades and reflecting growing international confidence in Bahraini diplomacy.

This key UN role reflects the Kingdom’s diplomatic and humanitarian approach under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, he stated.

The minister said Bahrain remains committed to working closely with Security Council members and the wider international community to support peace and stability, address traditional and emerging security challenges, promote inclusiveness and participation, including the empowerment of women and youth, and strengthen effective multilateral action.

"This UN council term conveys a message of peace, coexistence, solidarity, and shared prosperity to the international community," he added.

Dr Al Zayani noted that Bahrain’s role, including its representation of Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member states, its current presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and its active engagement within the United Nations system, underscores its commitment to multilateral cooperation and the maintenance of international peace and security in line with the UN Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law.

He said Bahrain advocates dialogue and wisdom in conflict resolution, respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, and the advancement of humanitarian action and sustainable development.

Bahrain places strong emphasis on supporting the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish an independent, sovereign state in accordance with the two-state solution, he added.
