WASHINGTON
US completes eighth night of Iran strikes after soldiers killed in Jordan

The US said it had completed an eighth straight night of attacks against Iran after earlier announcing that two US military personnel were killed in Jordan and another was missing following an Iranian attack.

The US and Iran have intensified attacks since an interim ceasefire deal signed a month ago fell apart last week, ‌raising the possibility of a return to all-out war.

US Central Command said in a statement that the airstrikes began at 6 p.m. ET (2200 GMT) on Saturday, at President Donald Trump's direction.

"The strikes are designed to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan last night," it said.

The CENTCOM later said it had completed its latest wave of strikes, targeting Iranian coastal military surveillance and air defence facilities.

Iran's Mehr news agency reported that the US struck an area near Sirik in southern Iran, adding there were no reported casualties or damage to infrastructure. The semi-official Tasnim news agency said US forces also targeted a site near Shadegan, close to the Iraqi border.

In retaliation, Iran's military launched a drone attack targeting US military assets and equipment at Kuwait's Al Adiri camp and Ali Al Salem Air Base, Iranian state television reported early on Sunday. It said the strikes were part of Iran's campaign against US assets and allies in the Gulf that began last week.

The attack on the Jordanian base came as retaliatory strikes from IRGC on US allies including neighbouring Gulf states of Bahrain and Kuwait against seventh day of American military strikes on Iran which led to widespread destruction and a few deaths.

Last night, US Central Command declared that two US service members were killed and one was missing in action, marking the first American military fatalities in the Iran war since March, as attacks between the two countries have escalated.

This raises the total count of US service members killed since the war began to 16, while over 430 have been wounded, reported CNN.

According to the statement by CENTCOM, four American service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan. All four have since been discharged. Other personnel who were assessed for minor injuries have already returned to duty.

CENTCOM will be withholding the identities of the fallen soldiers until 24 hours after their next of kin are notified, reported CNN, adding that it had reached out to the White House for comment on the fatalities.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged the news in a post on X, writing, “Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.”

The deaths could prompt fierce retaliation, which would come on top of an already intensifying conflict, reported the New York Times.

The US and Iran expanded the scope and intensity of their attacks overnight, striking critical infrastructure sites that included a power station and water facilities, with no sign of an off-ramp to end the fighting.
