The International Energy Agency (IEA) has urged member countries to consider accelerating diesel stock releases and assessing the need for additional supplies as global diesel markets tighten.
In a letter ahead of the IEA Governing Board meeting on
October 15, Executive Director Fatih Birol said current market conditions
require immediate attention and are best managed through continued cooperation
among member countries.
The IEA’s March 2026 Collective Action remains underway,
providing a framework for further measures to address near-term market
pressures.
Birol also highlighted renewed attacks on civilian and
energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including the deadly attacks on Riyadh’s
international airport.
The agency recommended that members yet to fulfil their
commitments under the March initiative consider accelerating remaining
releases, prioritising diesel.
Some countries have already released more volumes than
initially pledged, according to Birol.
All members, including those that have completed their
promised releases, were also encouraged to assess whether additional diesel
supplies are necessary.
Countries considering further releases should specify their
scale, timing and additional contribution beyond existing commitments.
The recommendations follow the IEA’s assessment of diesel
markets and a statement by G7 leaders, as governments seek to protect energy
security and economic stability amid tightening supply conditions.
The 15 October Governing Board meeting will provide an
opportunity for members to review progress and consider further coordinated
action.
“As we did in March, I believe we can once again demonstrate
the IEA’s capacity to act together in support of energy security and economic
stability,” Birol said. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
