Eni and Petronas have signed a Feasibility Agreement to evaluate the development of innovative high-performance bio-gasoline from renewable feedstocks, strengthening their collaboration on sustainable fuels and supporting the decarbonisation of transport.

Signed during the 2026 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, the agreement will assess the technical, market and sustainability aspects of new bio-gasoline products, as well as their performance in motorsport applications.

The study will explore their potential use in racing before supporting the development of commercial products for wider markets.

The technology under evaluation builds on Eni’s Ecofining process, which has been used since 2014 to produce hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuels from renewable raw materials.

Eni will contribute its experience in sustainable energy solutions and biofuel production through its Enilive biorefineries, which produce commercially available HVO diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), alongside its work on next-generation bio-gasoline.

PETRONAS will provide expertise in fuel technologies, including the development of high-performance sustainable fuels for combustion engines, as well as experience in sustainable energy solutions and advanced product development.

The agreement builds on several existing areas of cooperation between the two companies.

Eni and Petronas recently established Searah, a 50:50 joint venture combining operations in Indonesia and Malaysia, including 19 gas production and development assets.

The companies are also partners with Euglena through Pengerang Biorefinery Sdn. Bhd., which is developing a biorefinery in Pengerang, Johor, Malaysia.

The facility is expected to process up to 650,000 tonnes of renewable feedstocks annually by the second half of 2028, producing SAF, HVO diesel and bio-naphtha.

Enilive currently distributes HVO diesel at more than 1,700 service stations across Europe, highlighting Eni’s established position in renewable fuel production. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
