Tourism minister outlines vision for sustainable growth at Connect Barbados 2026

Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport, the Hon. Ian Gooding-Edghill, has highlighted the importance of collaboration, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in shaping the future of the island’s tourism sector as he officially opened Connect Barbados 2026.

Speaking at the opening of the country’s premier business-to-business tourism conference, held from June 22 to 26 under the theme “Rooted in Culture, Powered by Partnership,” Minister Gooding-Edghill welcomed international tour operators, travel advisors, airlines, media representatives, and local tourism stakeholders, emphasising the critical role of strong partnerships in driving continued growth across the industry.

The Minister described Connect Barbados as a key platform for strengthening relationships, creating new business opportunities, and expanding collaboration between Barbados and its global tourism partners.

Culture and Heritage at the Centre of Barbados’ Tourism Identity

Addressing delegates, Minister Gooding-Edghill highlighted Barbados’ cultural heritage as one of the destination’s most valuable tourism assets.

He noted the significance of hosting Connect Barbados 2026 at Hilton Barbados Resort, located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown and Its Garrison, reinforcing the connection between tourism, history, and cultural experiences.

The Minister encouraged visitors to experience Barbados beyond the conference by exploring the island’s traditions, heritage, cuisine, and hospitality, noting that authentic cultural encounters continue to distinguish the destination in an increasingly competitive global tourism market.

Government’s Vision for Sustainable Tourism Growth

Minister Gooding-Edghill outlined the Government’s vision for the next phase of tourism development, focused on increasing visitor spending, expanding economic opportunities for Barbadians, and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared throughout communities.

While recognising Barbados’ strong tourism performance in the previous year, he stressed that maintaining growth in a changing global environment will depend on stronger partnerships, market diversification, and sustainable development.

He highlighted several strategic initiatives currently underway, including the development of a Tourism Satellite Account and a National Tourism Strategy and Action Plan in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank.

A Tourism Value Chain Assessment is also being conducted to identify challenges, strengthen competitiveness, and maximise tourism’s contribution to the national economy.

Strengthening Global Connections and Market Opportunities

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening air connectivity, maintaining existing routes, expanding access to key and emerging markets, and working closely with airline partners to support continued tourism growth.

He also encouraged tourism stakeholders and Barbadians to learn foreign languages, particularly Spanish, to support Barbados’ growing focus on the Latin American market. He noted increasing interest from the region, including participation from Latin American delegates at Connect Barbados 2026.

Safety and Collaboration Remain Priorities

With Barbados entering the Atlantic hurricane season, Minister Gooding-Edghill reminded tourism operators of the importance of maintaining updated hurricane preparedness plans.

He emphasised that visitor and employee safety remains a shared responsibility and a key element of Barbados’ reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.

The Minister thanked tourism partners for their continued investment, advocacy, and confidence in Barbados, noting that these partnerships have contributed significantly to the island’s international tourism success.

Building the Future of Barbados Tourism Together

In his closing remarks, Minister Gooding-Edghill called on tour operators, travel advisors, airlines, investors, media representatives, restaurateurs, and policymakers to continue working together to create authentic, sustainable, and transformative tourism experiences.

He encouraged delegates to use Connect Barbados 2026 as an opportunity to build lasting partnerships that will support the continued evolution of the tourism sector.

The Minister also expressed appreciation to the Barbados Tourism Marketing (BTMI) team, both locally and overseas, for their dedication to promoting Destination Barbados, supporting industry partners, increasing visitor arrivals, and enhancing the island’s global reputation.

With record participation and renewed industry collaboration, Connect Barbados 2026 continues to demonstrate the importance of partnership in advancing Barbados’ tourism future. -TradeArabia News Service
