Alfa Laval has been selected by Saipem, the EPC contractor for Stockholm Exergi’s Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project, to supply heat transfer equipment for one of Europe’s largest bioenergy carbon capture facilities.
The project, expected to begin operations in 2028, aims to
capture, liquefy and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
This would represent around 1 per cent to 2 per cent of current global
carbon capture capacity.
The facility is being developed at Stockholm Exergi’s
biomass-based combined heat and power plant and is designed to support Sweden’s
climate neutrality ambitions and the EU’s broader climate strategy.
Once operational, it will capture CO₂ generated from the
combustion of biogenic fuels, with Alfa Laval’s heat transfer technologies
supporting energy efficiency and heat recovery.

thermal engineering challenges in the energy transition and effective energy
recovery is what ultimately makes it commercially viable,” says Thomas Møller,

”The plant will require a lot of energy to capture the CO2
from the flue gas and liquify it, but with the high quality Ziepack heat
exchangers from Alfa Laval, we will be able to reclaim the energy used. This
energy will go back in our existing district heating system, which contributes
additionally to our carbon removal targets,” says Egil Nybakk, Director BECCS
at Stockholm Exergi.
Alfa Laval will supply its Ziepack gas-gas interchanger
along with multiple process plate-and-frame heat exchangers.
The equipment will support the core carbon capture process
by improving energy recovery and overall system efficiency.
The equipment package was selected by Saipem as part of its
EPC contract for the BECCS facility.
The project is intended to become one of the world’s largest facilities for capturing and permanently storing biogenic CO₂, supporting Stockholm Exergi’s goal of delivering large-scale net-negative emissions. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
