Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg believes billions of people will be using personal AI agents within the next five years, as the technology evolves from today's chatbots into intelligent digital companions capable of managing many aspects of daily life.
Speaking during Meta's second-quarter earnings call, Zuckerberg said future AI agents will understand a person's goals and work continuously on their behalf, helping with health, finances, careers, relationships and household tasks. He described the widespread adoption of personal AI agents as increasingly inevitable.
As part of that vision, Meta is positioning its messaging platforms—including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram—as the primary interface for interacting with AI agents. Zuckerberg said these services will play an increasingly central role as consumers begin engaging with multiple AI agents throughout their daily lives, according to Emmanuel Abara Benson writing for Impact Newswire.
“I think that it’s extremely unlikely… that you don’t have billions of people with a personal agent that understands your goals and is just working on your behalf 24/7,” Zuckerberg told investors.
Meta is positioning its messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, at the centre of that vision. Zuckerberg said these services will become increasingly important as consumers begin interacting with multiple AI agents throughout their daily lives.
Zuckerberg’s comments come as Meta continues to accelerate investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company recently raised its projected capital expenditure for 2026 to between $130 billion and $145 billion, reflecting its push to expand data centre capacity and develop more advanced AI models.
Zuckerberg argued that while coding assistants have emerged as the first successful AI agents because developers are comfortable experimenting with new technology, the next phase of growth will come from consumer-focused agents that require little technical knowledge to use. Meta’s goal, he said, is to build products that work seamlessly for everyday users from the moment they are activated.
Meta has already begun expanding its AI offerings beyond consumers. The company recently rolled out AI agents for businesses across WhatsApp and Messenger, with more than one million businesses now using the tools for customer support and other commercial activities.
The prediction underscores intensifying competition among major technology companies to dominate the emerging AI agent market. Meta is competing with rivals including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Anthropic, all of which are developing AI systems capable of carrying out complex tasks with limited human input.
