Qatar set to launch next phase of $2bn power project

DOHA, August 22, 2016

Qatar will launch the next phase of its $2 billion power transmission and distribution project by the end of September, a report said.

The ‘Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion-Phase 13’ is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2018, according to The Peninsula report, which cited a new report on GCC’s power sector by Ventures Onsite.

The tender for the engineering, procurement and commissioning (EPC) contract for establishment of new substations of different voltage levels and modifications to the existing substations was issued last year.

The project is divided into 19 packages and the bidders were allowed to quote for more than one package.

Qatar’s peak demand of electricity in 2015 was about 7,000 megawatt (MW) and 330 million gallons per day of water, which is expected to grow by 6-8 per cent, the report said.
