Bahrain students develop new cooling system

MANAMA, February 21, 2015

Three students from the Bahrain University have developed a new technology that can boost the production of the kingdom's liquefied propane gas.

The chemical engineering students - Sadiq Salah Rahma, Zakareya Elyas Akbar and Mohammed Abdulla Mohsen - have created a new cooling system that improves the efficiency of refrigerating compressors used in Bahrain National Gas Company (Banagas).

The technology was found to increase propane production by up to 9.6 per cent a day, which is equivalent to 245 barrels a day ' meaning it can save about BD6,700 ($17,671) per day and more than BD1 million ($2.63 million) a year, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

It was named the best senior project in the university's chemical engineering department and was showcased during an exhibition at the Isa Town campus, which was attended by senior officials and students, it stated.

"We were chosen to work on the project by one of our supervising professors who had previously discussed the idea with Banagas officials," said Rahma.

"We welcomed the idea because we thought it was unique and we wanted to work on a challenging project especially since by producing more liquefied propane we can produce propylene, which can be used to manufacture many products in Bahrain," he added.

Meanwhile, Banagas instrumentation engineer Siddiq Al Busmait said the company supported the students during their project by providing them with all the necessary data.

"The students used our help to get all the data and figures they need for their project and we co-operated with them and gave them our opinion about any possible choices," stated Al Busmait.

"It is excellent and 80 per cent done, and it just needs to be developed in order to be actually implemented," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
