Clampdown on 'Dream Boxes'

Manama, June 20, 2007

Bahrain is clamping down on the illegal programming of popular 'Dream Box' satellite receivers, it was announced.

However, the sale of the receivers has not been outlawed, Information Ministry publications director Jamal Dawood said.

He pointed out that some satellite shops were programming the receivers so people could watch subscription channels for free through the Internet.

"Selling the receiver is not banned by law, but its illegal usage is," he said.

"Shops found programming it will face legal action immediately.

"A month ago we distributed a circular to all satellite shops to stop (illegally) programming those receivers."

Sources said many shops have stopped stocking the Dream Box after receiving the circular over fears that they would be prosecuted. TradeArabia News Service
