Italian Andrea Doria arrives in Abu Dhabi for Idex
ABU DHABI, February 23, 2015
The Italian destroyer Andrea Doria has arrived at Abu Dhabi port for the ongoing International Defence Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi.
Captain Angelo Virdis, the commanding officer, said: “The ship has just arrived in Mina Zayed Port after 191 days of Counter piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin to take part to the Idex event that is becoming the most important defence exhibition in the Gulf area.
“Visitors after the registration at the Navdex at the Adnec Marina, will have, for the first time, the chance to visit an Italian Horizon-class vessel, an example of state-of-the-art naval security technology.”
ITS Doria has a crew of 193 seamen and the unit is fully equipped with sensors, weapons and combat management system mainly from Finmeccanica’s group companies.
It was built in Riva Trigoso Fincantieri’s Shipyards and commissioned in 2007. The ship is a ‘multi-role’ ship able to counter air, surface and underwater threats and to perform many tasks, in particular medium range air defence, therefore contributing to the protection of naval formations and convoys, said a statement.
The ship is equipped with a medium range missile system “PAAMS” – Principal Anti Air Missile System (MBDA), a multi-functional radar, Empar – European Multifunctional Phased Array Radar (Selex ES) and a long range radar, it said.
The unit is also equipped with a Combat Management System CMS (Selex ES), an Electronic Warfare System (Elettronica ELT) and two multisensory tracking systems (radar and electro-optical) by Selex ES.
Self-defense is guaranteed by the inner layer defence system based on three Super Rapid 76/62 mm Naval Guns and two Single 25 mm guns, all produced by OTO Melara, it added. - TradeArabia News Service
