Al-Modawat Specialized Medical Company is expanding the inpatient capacity of Al-Modawat Hospital by 60% as part of a wider expansion programme driven by high demand.

The expansion of the inpatient department in the hospital’s East Building will involve the full allocation of the second and third floors for new inpatient suites. Once completed, the project will increase the hospital’s total number of inpatient suites by 700%, the company said in a filing to the Saudi Exchange.

The expansion will be implemented in two phases.

The first phase, involving the preparation of the second floor, will add capacity equivalent to 30% of the hospital’s existing inpatient capacity and increase the number of inpatient suites by 350%. The work is currently 70% complete and is expected to be completed, with operations expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and licensing requirements.

The second phase will involve completing and preparing the third floor of the East Building as an extension of the inpatient department. It will add a further 30% of the hospital’s current inpatient capacity and another 350% increase in the number of inpatient suites. The company expects the phase to be completed and operational during 2027.

The expansion comes as Al-Modawat Hospital records high operating rates, prompting the company to broaden the scope of its inpatient expansion project.

In another major component of the programme, construction and preparation of 42 new clinics in the East Building have been completed. Furniture installation and the installation of medical equipment and supplies are currently under way, with the clinics expected to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The company has also completed a 51-metre connecting corridor between the hospital’s main building and the East Expansion Building. The corridor is now operational and is expected to improve movement between the buildings and integration of the hospital’s facilities.

The hospital has further completed the installation and commissioning of a CT scan unit. Remaining works and equipment installation in the Radiology Department are under way, with the department being prepared to operate at full capacity.

Al-Modawat said the expansion programme has been reprioritised to focus resources and space on the new inpatient suites. As a result, the planned expansion of the Physical Therapy Department has been deferred to a later phase in line with the hospital’s operational priorities.

Additional expansion work has also been incorporated into the waiting area of the East Building. The space allocated for the men’s sports club has been adjusted to meet operational requirements, and the club has been fully equipped and is now operational. The women’s sports club and Laundry Department expansion have been deferred to later phases.

The company said the overall cost of the expansion programme remains subject to change because of ongoing construction, modifications and additions to the scope of work. The final cost will be determined upon completion of the projects and reflected in the company’s financial results according to the respective completion and operational stages.

Al-Modawat said the announced operational dates remain subject to fulfilment of applicable legal and regulatory requirements and obtaining the necessary licences and approvals from the relevant authorities. - TradeArabia News Service
