The UAE’s renewable energy capacity has increased more than 63-fold over the past decade, rising from 129 MW in 2015 to more than 8.2 GW in 2025, according to Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al Olama said the UAE has made significant progress in expanding clean energy, strengthening the national electricity network, improving grid interconnection and deploying advanced technologies and data systems to enhance grid management and readiness.

Clean energy accounted for 32.4 per cent of the UAE’s electricity generation in 2025, with the country targeting a 35 per cent share by 2031.

Electricity generated from clean sources exceeded 62.4 GWh, while total installed clean energy capacity reached 13,805 MW, including nuclear, photovoltaic and concentrated solar power, wind and waste-to-energy projects.

Overall electricity generation reached 192,735 GWh in 2025, compared with consumption of 174,524 GWh, reflecting continued efforts to diversify the energy mix and strengthen grid resilience.

Al Olama highlighted the Emirates Monitoring Centre, the first national facility of its kind to provide real-time monitoring of the UAE’s integrated power network by connecting all four electricity utilities.

Its second phase included a renewable energy management study developed with Siemens to enhance grid monitoring and coordination.

The UAE is also pursuing initiatives supporting the green transition, including electric and hybrid vehicle battery recycling, green industrial development, clean-energy solutions and resource efficiency.

Two pilot projects are also supporting the expansion of electric transport.

Al Olama said the ministry would continue working with federal and local authorities, national companies and the private sector to develop the electricity market, expand clean energy and strengthen grid interconnection.

He added that national energy policies and projects have received local and international recognition for achievements in clean energy, sustainability and electricity markets.

The ministry’s ongoing efforts aim to strengthen energy security, improve system efficiency and ensure the UAE’s energy infrastructure can meet rising economic and population demand while advancing national sustainability, clean-energy and climate-neutrality goals.
