BYD secures 11.27GWh Masdar contract for mega RTC project

Chinese battery maker BYD Energy Storage has announced that it has secured a major contract from Masdar, a global clean energy leader, for a gigascale round-the-clock renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi. The project has a single-station scale of 1,644 MW with 11.275 GWh of BYD Haohan deployed. 

This contract win comes close on the heels of BYD Energy Storage clinching the order for world’s largest grid-side energy storage project of 12.5 GWh in Saudi Arabia.

Located in Abu Dhabi, RTC is the world’s first gigascale renewable energy project integrating solar power and battery energy storage. 

Jointly developed by Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the project integrates a 5.2 GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), the largest and most technologically advanced system of its kind in the world. 

BYD said its Haohan energy storage platform, powered by Blade Battery technology, would be deployed for the project as the system is designed to improve energy density and reliability while reducing the complexity of battery management systems.

Once operational, the project will produce gigascale baseload energy at a globally competitive rate for the first time, setting a new international benchmark and reaffirming the UAE’s position in renewable energy development. The project will act as a blueprint that can be replicated internationally to meet the growing demand for clean, secure, round-the-clock power.

The Chinese battery maker said it supports reliable operation across a wide temperature range of -30°C to 55°C. Designed for the harsh environments of the Middle Eastern desert, characterized by extreme heat, severe aridity, and intense sandstorms, the system features the world’s highest Ingress Protection Rating of IP66. 

Completely dust-proof, it excels in extreme environments such as deserts, handling multiple extreme environments to guarantee the long-term stable and efficient operation, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
