Qatar opens first smart mosque with solar power, water recycling

Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs has officially inaugurated its first smart mosque, featuring renewable energy and water-saving technologies, as it seeks to modernise mosque infrastructure and promote sustainability.

Built on a 4,015-sq-m site in the Muaither area, Qais bin Saad bin Ubadah Mosque can accommodate about 350 worshippers, including 300 men and 50 women. The complex also includes residences for the imam and muezzin, along with supporting service facilities.

“The mosque is equipped with intelligent systems to monitor and manage electricity and water consumption, solar panels to generate power for lighting and air conditioning, and a water recycling system that reuses ablution water for toilets and landscape irrigation,” explained Mohammed bin Hamad Al Kuwari, Assistant Undersecretary for Da'wah and Mosque Affairs at the ministry.

The smart mosque is being implemented as part of its 2025–2030 strategic plan, which focuses on upgrading mosque infrastructure, improving the quality and efficiency of religious services, adopting modern technologies in mosque management and operation, and promoting sustainability across endowment-funded projects, he stated.

The initiative also aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, which seeks to advance sustainable development, improve quality of life and strengthen the role of religious institutions in serving society, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
