US President Donald Trump warned that the “big wave” of the US attack on Iran is yet to come as he laid out his war objectives for reporters.
He said he wanted to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, annihilate its navy, end its nuclear ambitions and stop it arming militant groups.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command claimed that forces have destroyed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command and control facilities, Iranian air defence capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and military airfields during sustained operations.
"We will continue to take decisive action against imminent threats posed by the Iranian regime," it said.
It said the Operation Epic Fury involves the largest regional concentration of American military firepower in a generation.
As of 4 pm ET, March 2, six US service members have been killed in action. US forces recently recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted for service members from a facility that was struck during Iran's initial attacks in the region, it said.
The US military said it had struck more than 1,250 targets in Iran and destroyed 11 Iranian ships.
Meanwhile, Israel said it is conducting “simultaneous strikes in Tehran and Beirut,” targeting Iranian military sites and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he expected the war against Iran was "not going to take years", as the conflict widened with Israel attacking Iran-backed Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and Iran hitting Gulf states that host US bases.
Trump initially projected the war to last four to five weeks, but since sought to justify a broad, open-ended war on Iran.
"I said it could be quick and decisive. It may take some time, but it's not going to take years. It's not an endless war," Netanyahu said on Fox News' "Hannity" program on Monday.
The Israeli military has prepared for a campaign against Iran that could last several weeks but is unlikely to see the deployment of ground forces, a military spokesperson told reporters on Tuesday.
"We have prepared a general scope of weeks," Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani said in an online briefing, adding that the duration of the military campaign could change, depending on developments. He described progress so far as positive.
