Smiths Detection unveils new checkpoint scanner

JEDDAH, November 18, 2018

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection recently announced it has gained ECAC EDS CB C3 approval for the innovative HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX checkpoint scanner.

Eliminating the need to remove electronic devices and liquids from hand luggage, subject to local authority guidelines, travellers will soon be able to experience a smoother airport experience thanks to a new checkpoint scanner developed by Smiths Detection.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX scanner, which is the first to feature the company’s proprietary CT scanning technology, can be incorporated easily into existing checkpoint lanes at minimal upgrade costs. Integration into an advanced screening and management platform, such as Smiths Detection’s Checkpoint Evoplus, will streamline operations even further through remote screening and directed search; as well as providing access to valuable management data.

“Travelling in and out of the Gulf can prove to be a long process, especially given the size of some of the regional airports such as Dubai International,” said Tom Squier, managing director – Smiths Detection.

“This new checkpoint scanner would not only make the whole journey quicker, but also less of a hassle, particularly for frequent travellers. As technology continues to evolve rapidly on a daily basis, it is vital we adapt to changing times and ensure we deliver solutions to customers to make their lives just that much easier and smoother.”

Simply handling fewer trays can significantly increase throughput, while the 0.2m/s belt speed and low false alarm rate can also speed up the process.

Available to order now, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX delivers the highest levels of security demanded by new regulations, whilst optimizing checkpoint performance through improved productivity, a better passenger experience and lower operational costs.

“Computed Tomography (CT) scanning is expected to be one of the fields impacted by the rise of automation and artificial intelligence, driving increased efficiency across the board,” continued Tom Squier.

“Liquids and electronics are often subject to rules and regulations which require travellers to remove them from their hand luggage during security screenings. The new scanners are therefore expected to improve passenger experience in times of travel.”

The scanner is currently undergoing field tests, with the value of CT at checkpoints likely to become apparent fairly quickly. CT technology is considered to have the most potential for future development, by introducing advanced algorithms, reducing false alarm rates and taking operational efficiency to new levels. In addition, Smiths Detection is already looking at further developments such as the automatic detection of other dangerous or prohibited items such as guns and large knives.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX is both ECAC EDS CB C3 approved and TSA AT-2 certified, a company statement said. – TradeArabia News Service
