The Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah is likely to welcome over 2 million visitors this summer following the development and renovation of its seaside resorts, said a report.

The number of tourists is expected to increase further once the ongoing northern Corniche project’s fourth and fifth phases are completed this October. The SR800 million ($213.2 million) project covers more than 4 kilometers of coastal line on the Red Sea, Saudi Gazette reported.

The Jeddah municipality has already implemented the first three phases of the project and the upcoming fourth and fifth phases will include services and recreation facilities for all groups of people including children. Facilities include sandy beaches, resting places, children’s games, jogging areas, greeneries and parking places.

The Jeddah municipality has given top priority to tourism projects on the Red Sea to enhance the welfare of tourists as well as Saudi and foreign visitors.

The Red Sea tourism project, launched this week by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, would strengthen Jeddah’s position in the tourism world. The project will be implemented by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) in cooperation with the world's largest hotel companies.

The project involved development of exceptional resorts on more than 50 natural islands between the cities of Umluj and Al-Wajh. The project’s site is a few kilometers away from one of the kingdom's protected reserves and dormant volcanoes, the report said.

The project aims to promote international tourism by opening the Red Sea gate to the world in order to identify its treasures and embark on new adventures that will attract tourists from all parts of the globe.

“The project will be a center for recreation, healthcare and relaxation and an integrated model for a healthy and vital society,” an official statement said.

The foundation for the project will be laid in the third quarter of 2019 and the first phase will be completed in the last quarter of 2022, the statement said. It includes development of an airport, seaport, hotels and luxurious apartments.
