Radisson Blu Dubai wins top honours

Dubai, January 3, 2011

The Rezidor Hotel Group recently awarded the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City with the ‘Rezidor Middle East Responsible Business Award’.

“We are proud to receive the ‘Responsible Business Hotel of the Year 2010’ award from our head office,” said Pasquale Baiguera, general manager at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City.

“We will continue focusing on introducing additional environmental friendly activities.”

As part of the hotel’s initiative, the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City put several environmental friendly initiatives in place, such as recycling bins for paper, glass and cans, energy saving bulbs in all offices and corridors, battery recycling, participation in Earth Hour, creating the first eco-friendly roundabout in Dubai Media City and the implementation of sensors in all guest hand-wash areas to avoid water wastage as well as a dual flush system in all guest toilets.

In March 2010, the team at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City had worked out a novel energy-saving idea to create lighting using otherwise discarded shampoo holders. The lamps stand on a recycled stainless steel base, each comprising 16-20 shampoo holders and an energy saving LED bulb.

'We estimate that the lamps, which we have named Lampoo in honour of their shampoo holder-origin, are twice as eco-friendly as their traditional counterparts.'

“Our engineering team combined engineering skills and creative ideas to create the Lampoo eco-friendly lighting system team using recycled materials salvaged from a bathroom refit that took place in some rooms,” said Baiguera.

Another step was the replacement of the existing hotel’s outdoor signage with a LED technique signage in 2008. LED signs have a duration of up to 50,000 hours, much longer than light and neon tubes. With a 12 hour per day operation time, a 10 years durability can be expected.

“Our latest initiative is the implementation of eco-friendly paper in the entire hotel to reduce the impact on the environment,” concluded Baiguera.-TradeArabia News Service
