Roof collapse mall in Bahrain to reopen
MANAMA, December 8, 2014
A shopping mall in Bahrain that has been closed for more than a month after the ceiling collapsed will be partially reopened for customers.
The Public Prosecution gave the green light yesterday for Enma Mall, Riffa, to reopen its ground floor to shoppers, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
Investigations are still ongoing into the ceiling collapse on November 1, but a Public Prosecution statement said it had agreed to the ground floor being opened after safety requirements were met.
“Regarding the investigations into the collapse of part of the ceiling of Enma Mall in Riffa, the Public Prosecution has summoned a special committee from the Works Ministry to examine the building and find out the reasons behind the incident and the person responsible,” chief prosecutor Nawaf Al Awadhi said in a statement.
“The mall was also ordered to shut down for people's safety.
“The Public Prosecution also summoned a person injured in the accident and sent him to a medical examiner, whose report showed that the injured man had fully recovered without any permanent injures.
“The Civil Defence and engineering office also confirmed the safety of the ground floor of the mall.
“Therefore, the Public Prosecution ordered the ground floor to be reopened for visitors.
“Investigations are still ongoing and the Public Prosecution is awaiting a report from the committee assigned to investigate the incident, which will be concluded soon.”
Southern Governor Shaikh Abdulla bin Rashid Al Khalifa previously handed over a list of names of those who could be held accountable for the ceiling collapse based on initial investigations.
However, their identities have not been revealed.
The GDN earlier reported that the mall had to be evacuated when chunks of plaster, wood and metalwork came crashing down in the central atrium of the shopping complex. - TradeArabia News Service
