Major accidents take place on Bahrain roads

MANAMA, July 29, 2015

Chaos reigned on Bahrain’s roads yesterday (July 28) with four serious accidents, a vehicle fire and a motorcyclist killed in a hit-and-run.

It began early, when a head-on collision at the Seef intersection of Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway left four people injured – two of them children, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The victims were two young Bahraini women, a seven-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl.

“It happened at 1.57am between two cars on Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway,” an Interior Ministry official told the GDN.

“The injured were taken to hospital.

“The first car was a white Toyota Yaris driven by a 49-year-old Bangladeshi, who sustained no injuries.

“The second car was also a white Yaris being driven by a 29-year-old Bahraini female who sustained minor injuries to her left hand.

“There was also a female passenger in that car, 19 years old, who had multiple injuries all over her body as well as a nine-year-old girl who fractured her right leg and a seven-year-old boy with head injuries.”

Just hours later, a 42-year-old Bahraini motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run in Demistan.

Sayed Musa Sharaf was knocked off his bike at around 4am and died at the scene.

The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck him initially fled but then handed himself in to the police at 5.30am, an Interior Ministry official said.

He has been taken into police custody.

Morning rush-hour was then brought to a standstill through the underpass on Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway near Mina Salman after a car overturned at around 6.30am.

An eyewitness told the GDN that the young Bahraini driver had lost control of his car following a burst tyre.

Fortunately, the driver was not seriously injured and traffic police arrived at the scene shortly afterwards to remove the vehicle and clear the road.

Just half an hour later, a car burst into flames in Busaiteen – leaving it completely gutted and a nearby parked car damaged as well.

A video of Civil Defence personnel putting out the fire was circulated online, however, no further details about
the cause of the fire were available.

Later in the day, a car was hit by a bus on Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway, which caused major tailbacks going towards Hamad Town.

Pictures of the aftermath of the crash, which took place at around 1.30pm, were captured by motorists caught in traffic and circulated on social media.

An Asian also sustained injuries after two vehicles collided on Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway at around 6pm.

Sources told the GDN that a black Nissan car driven by a young Bahraini man hit a mini-van knocking it off the highway into the barrier. - TradeArabia News Service
