Tough Mudder announces record prize pool for AlUla obstacle course race

AlUla, November 29, 2023

Tough Mudder has announced a total prize pot of close to SAR1.9 million ($506,666) for its inaugural Tough Mudder Infinity AlUla event on February 24, 2024, which includes the largest single prize in the history of obstacle course racing (OCR).

An eight-hour competition which tests both the physical and mental resolve of participants, Tough Mudder Infinity AlUla will take place in the ancient oasis city located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia.

Rami AlMoallim, Vice President of Destination Management and Marketing at the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) said: “Throughout millennia, AlUla has stood as a testament to nature and human connection, and we carry forth that legacy with the hosting of the inaugural Tough Mudder Infinity AlUla.

“This endurance challenge marks an exciting chapter in AlUla's sporting and adventure journey by establishing challenging moments for athletes and Tough Mudder enthusiasts as they embark on this once-in-a-lifetime, eight-hour obstacle course immersed in the rugged beauty of AlUla.”

Nic Cartwright, Tough Mudder Middle East licence holder, said: “We are delighted to provide such a significant prize fund for this first-of-its-kind event in Saudi Arabia, where competitors will take on extreme challenges and push their bodies to the limit both physically and mentally.

“The amount of money on offer for those athletes taking part, which includes SAR300,000 for the winners of both the male and female individual events, is yet another indication of the region’s dedication to enhancing its ever-growing reputation as a global sporting hub, and we look forward to what will be a brilliant and groundbreaking competition.”

Participants can enter Tough Mudder Infinity AlUla as an individual, team of two or team of four, and for those athletes looking to compete in a more standard event, there are also 5K and 10K races.

Along with the winners’ SAR300,000, which is one of the largest single prizes in obstacle course racing history, the runners-up and third-place finishers in the individual events will pick up SAR120,000 and SAR60,000 respectively, while any athlete finishing in the top 10 will receive a large cash prize.

In the ‘team of two’ race, meanwhile, the winning pair will claim SAR75,000 (37,500 SAR per person), with SAR30,000 and SAR 15,000 going to the teams who finish in second and third places.
