UAE to implement smart ID based voting system

ABU DHABI, February 21, 2015

The technical committee of the National Election Committee (NEC) is planning to implement an electronic voting system that uses ‘smart ID’ issued by the Emirates Identity Authority.

During its first meeting at the Emirates Identity Authority in Abu Dhabi, the members discussed the mechanism for organising the Federal National Council Elections 2015 on par with global standards.

The committee reviewed the initiatives to be launched as part of the NEC’s integrated efforts to hold the elections on time and ensure that the electronic systems required for the success of the electoral process are available.

The meeting, chaired by Misbah Obaid Al Mismari, the executive director of corporate and support services at Emirates Identity Authority, stressed the need to take advantage of the experiences of the previous elections to complete the preparations for the upcoming election.

It also discussed the requirements for the implementation of the ‘smart ID’ based electronic voting system.

Emphasising the importance of providing all the means to the voters to exercise their electoral rights with ease, the meeting focused on provision of best services that are consistent with the UAE’s Smart Government initiative.

The Emirates Identity Authority had developed an electronic voting system for the FNC elections in 2011, which played a prominent role in the success of the elections.

The use of ID card has added a new qualitative dimension to the elections that will ensure security of the votes.-TradeArabia News Service
