Bahraini schoolgirl dies after being run over

Manama, May 21, 2014

A Bahraini schoolgirl died yesterday (May 20) morning after being run over at Al Iman School in Isa Town.

Noora Jaber Sultan Al Suwaidi, aged 10, suffered fatal head injuries when she was hit by a GMC Yukon that reversed suddenly, according to sources.

She died on the spot and her body was transferred to the BDF Hospital, while the 38-year-old Indian driver of the car was taken into custody, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

"The family is in deep shock and are struggling to come to terms with her death," a relative told the GDN.

"It's a tragedy and shocking news for them, and they need some time alone, away from the media and others."

A source at the hospital said Noora fractured her skull in several places as a result of the accident.

"It was a horrible accident. The girl sustained severe head injuries and died immediately," he said.

"Even a grown-up cannot survive being hit by a big car and she was just a child.

"We feel sorry for the family and pay our deepest condolences to them."

Noora, a student of Al Iman School, was buried in Hunainiya Valley cemetery in Riffa yesterday afternoon in the presence of family members, relatives and neighbours.

No one from the school was available for comment when contacted by the GDN.

Noora is the second girl to have died in a horrific car accident in Bahrain in less than a week.

Three-year-old Khadija Hamdi Abduljawad was run over last Wednesday when she was outside her home in Galali.

She was taken to King Hamad University Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A 49-year-old Bahraini woman, the driver of the car, was taken into custody as a result of Khadija's death. - TradeArabia News Service
