Bahrain to discuss draft law on domestic abuse

Manama, February 28, 2014

A draft law on protecting families from domestic violence will be on the agenda of the Shura Council when it convenes on Monday.

The 21-article bill defines types of domestic violence and ensures the aggressor will not escape from the long arm of the law, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

Anyone who breaks the law will face a jail-term ranging from one month to five years and a fine ranging from BD100 to BD500 (($263 to $1,318) or both.

Under the law, acts that result in mental injuries will carry a jail sentence of no more than six months or a maximum fine of BD100, or both, said the GDN report.

Sexual abuse and violence that results in physical injuries could result in the accused facing a jail term of upto five years or a fine of no more than BD500 or both, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
