Any Bahraini holding dual citizenship must inform the General Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Residence which will verify his legal status, said a senior government official.

Under-Secretary for Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa added the legal status will be verified in accordance with Article 9 of naturalisation law of Bahrain.

Under the article, a Bahraini citizen may lose his nationality “if he has voluntarily acquired another nationality and an order is issued by His Majesty the King to withdraw the nationality of that person”.

The announcement comes after the Interior Ministry found that some citizens holding dual nationality are taking advantage of their status to protect themselves in legal cases after committing acts that jeopardize national security and peace which are punishable by law. – TradeArabia News Service
