Bahrain mulls salary cap for civil servants

Bahrain is considering caps on salaries and aptitude tests for civil servants as well as adjustment of eligibility criteria for senior posts in the public sector, said a senior official.

Deputy Premier and Deputy Head of the Civil Service Bureau Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, directed that a committee be set up in charge of evaluating newly-appointed directors' qualifications, competence, years of experience and promotions before

 He also requested the bureau to prepare a study to assess candidates' performance before their appointment as directors in government establishments, at the Civil Service Bureau meeting.

He stressed the importance of taking part in training sessions co-organised with Bahrain Institute of Public Administration (BIPA) to boost supervisory and management skills of the nominees.

Shaikh Khalid said the aim is to choose the right man which will boost services in terms of speed and quality.

The meeting also discussed putting a cap on salaries for special job categories, including foreign experts and consultants. The bureau was urged to draw up regulations in co-ordination with the Finance Ministry.

Other key issues pertaining mainly to the labour field and retirees' pensions were also discussed, including the need to speed up procedures to ensure retirees receive their pensions as soon as they finish service. – TradeArabia News Service
