Bahrain’s Royal Charity Organisation has signed an agreement to deliver the first relief aid consignment to famine-stricken Somalia, aiming to help cure 1,000 Somalis suffering from cataract.

Secretary-general Dr Mustafa Al Sayyed signed a second agreement on the sidelines of a dig 10 wells at a cost of $1.2 million in co-operation with Islamic Relief.

A specialist hospital bearing the name of Bahrain will also be constructed as part of a $1.5 million project.

A nursing college funded by Bahrain will also be constructed to train medical cadres and meet health needs in Somalia.

The initiatives followed instructions from RCO board chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

An RCO delegation, led by Dr Al Sayyed, visited Mogadishu Ophthalmology Specialist Hospital and was briefed by Health Minister Abdul Aziz Al Sheikh Yusuf on essential requirements.
