Bahrain releases detained former MPs

Manama, August 8, 2011

Bahrain has released several prisoners arrested in connection with Bahrain's unrest, including two former opposition MPs and a lawyer.

Attorney General Abdulrahman Al Sayed said they were released after their cases were reviewed upon being transferred from the National Safety Court to the civilian courts.

Although no official release figure was given, he explained the suspects were set free because the time they spent in custody was equivalent to the sentence they would get if found guilty.

Former Al Wefaq MPs Jawad Fairooz and Mattar Mattar, as well as lawyer Mohammed Al Tajer, were among those freed - as well as others living in Bani Jamra, Sitra, Ma'ameer, Daih and other areas.

The two MPs, who represented Al Wefaq National Islamic Society in parliament before resigning in February, were arrested in May, accused of publicly inciting hatred against the regime, taking part in illegal protests and spreading false news. – TradeArabia News Service
