Etisalat confirms commitment to sustainability

Abu Dhabi, January 20, 2009

Etisalat confirmed its commitment to enhancing the use of alternative energy and practising the most energy efficient business practices across its operations and premises.

'Etisalat is one of the UAE leaders in green building technology, architecture and design. We manage our operations with the latest smart-building technologies that help us to realise significant savings in power consumption,' said Dr Ahmed Al Jarwan, general manager at Etisalat Real Estate.

'Our premises are also constructed with the latest thermal insulation and are orientated to make the best use of available sunlight and minimise the absorption of heat. These and other initiatives are in line with the UAE government’s vision for sustainability and we are committed to continue innovating in the use of environmentally friendly technologies.”

Etisalat made its first venture into alternative power in 1988 by investing in a solar water-heating project in Sharjah. It has since established 160 solar powered facilities and base stations across the UAE. Etisalat’s base stations are today helping to provide mobile coverage to residents in the UAE’s most remote areas as well as nearby islands.

Etisalat is also rolling out a nationwide next generation network (NGN) across the UAE. These networks require less energy compared to legacy networks, and also pave the road for environmentally friendly business applications like video conferencing.

Etisalat shares its experience in smart homes and services with its subsidiaries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East in order to help them adopt the best environmentally friendly practices.-TradeArabia News Service
