New rules on way for photographs in Bahraini publications

MANAMA, June 25, 2015

New censorship rules for photographs published in Bahrain’s newspapers and magazines could be introduced.

The aim is to outlaw images that contravene Islam or Bahraini cultural traditions, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

Parliament’s public utilities and environment affairs committee yesterday (June 23) approved the concept and is planning to meet the Bahrain Journalists Association and the Information Affairs Ministry to discuss it further.

“It is still too early to know what the criteria are, we can’t exaggerate things and can’t describe everything as normal,” committee chairman Jamal Dawood told the GDN.

“For example, some women are shown in a party dancing or drinking and there are cases in which decent clothes are worn, but the pose indicates something sexual or immoral.” - TradeArabia News Service
