Indian writer Gulzar set for Dubai show

DUBAI, January 13, 2015

Gulzaar Theatre Fiesta, an amazing theatrical attraction featuring one of the most celebrated writers of India, will be held as part of the 20th edition of Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), organized by the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

Sampooran Singh Kalra (known popularly by his pen name Gulzar) will be at the DSF to raise the curtain on a series of powerful stories written by him and directed by his longtime associate Salim Arif from January 15 to 17.

Kharaashein – the Scars from Riots is a dynamic collection of the iconic writer’s literary gems and will feature stories such as Hilsa, Raavi-Paar, Khauff, Khuda-Haafiz and Aadaab.

Gifted artists in the likes of Atul Kulkarni, Yashpal Sharma, Nisar Khan, Amit Jairath, Salim Arim and Lubna Salim will portray the legendary virtuoso's characters on stage on 15 January at 7pm onwards.

Gulzaar Theatre Fiesta is on the agenda for anyone looking to be gratified by the sheer literary brilliance of Gulzar, said the organisers.

The creative genius of Gulzar, an award-winning lyricist, poet and director, is set to meet the adeptness of the talented theatre and film director Salim Arif, at Centrepoint Theatre, DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates.

The play on 16 January called Sunte Ho is a story of women in the form of a theatrical jewel featuring Rabindranath Tagore’s short story Streer Patro and Gulzar’s own Mard. The performance will see artists like Lubna Salim, Bakul Thakkar, Amit Jairath, Neetu Pandey, Pooja Nair, Yassir Khan and Nisar Khan take to stage for 90 minutes starting at 7pm.

The concluding day of the fiesta will bring to life the fitting comedy acts of Arre O’ Henry – set to showcase the lighter side of Gulzar’s ecletic works.

The three stories, including Shaadi Kara Lo, Nuskha, Madam and Bal Bal Bache offer comic relief with Vrajesh Hirjee, Bakul Thakkar, Amit Jairath, Yassir Khan, Neetu Pandey and Lubna Salim on stage. This collection of stories will be presented on 17 January at 4pm, said the organisers.

As a farewell bonus, Gulzar will be at a special rendezvous with fans at Rubaru (face to face with Gulzar) on  January 17 at 8pm. After the heart-to-heart conversation with Salim Arif, Gulzar will also recite a few select poems from his vast poetry collection.-TradeArabia News Service
