Equine products ... growing market in UAE.

UAE equine product imports top $326m

DUBAI, October 29, 2014

The total annual import of equine products and equipment in the UAE crossed Dh1.2 billion ($326 million) in 2013, a cumulative increase of 20 per cent compared to 2009, according to latest figures.

The statistics were revealed at a press conference hosted by Al Fajer Information and Services to announce Al Fares 2014, the international equine trade fair which will feature 215 companies and major national pavilions from 21 countries.

“International companies have recognised the significance of the equine industry in the GCC. UAE customers are distinguished by a purchasing power that is three times that of their European counterparts on equine products,” said Rasheed Mbayed, exhibition manager, Al Fares 2014.

“That’s why European companies have chosen to participate in Al Fares, instead of other shows taking place in Europe during the same period.”

The three day show, which opens today (October 29) at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre (DICEC), will feature 215 companies from over 21 countries.

The show comes at a time when races are increasing, including endurance, flat races and show jumping. Also, a number of private and public clubs are coming up in the UAE, according to Mbayed.

“Al Fares is the only exhibition recognized worldwide as a leading trade platform, due to the booming regional market for equestrian products. Among the major participants will be global players in the equestrian trade from Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland the US and the UK,” Mbayed added.

Mbayed said that the UAE will have the single largest contingent, occupying a 40 per cent of the total number of exhibitors. Collectively, these companies represent over 350 brands from across the world.

Speaking about the new entrants, Mbayed said: “The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is participating in the show with a dedicated stand showcasing latest student projects. The university recently launched a new branch to study veterinary science and its participation is linked to trends in veterinary equipment. Factors like the growing focus on veterinary sector in the GCC and the launch of the university’s veterinary program will boost the region’s equestrian industry.”

Mbayed added that the series of equestrian events taking place in the UAE were positively impacting the industry. One example was the event organised by The Ministry of Environment and Water and Emirates Racing Authority, the UAE's regulatory racing body, recently in Dubai: the OIE Regional Conference on International Competition Horse Movement.

Mbayed explained a strategy that drives the equine industry in the UAE includes around 18 different competitions, festivals, auctions and events held this season (2014 – 2015) at Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club.

Al Fares 2014 will also witness participation of new names in equine industry from countries participating for the first time, such as Seven Horses from Australia and Over Horses from Poland. Moreover, Pakistan will be making its first debut in this year’s edition.

Al Fares, the oldest equine show in Mena region, will also see the launch of new innovative products, such as a GPS camera system that combines video filming cameras and GPS-enabled wrist bands, allowing horse riders to film their movements on the saddle.

Mbayed said: “New trends in the equine industry included online booking of equipment and equine clothes in the UAE will be highlighted at the show as several exhibitors have started to understand the importance of technology-driven trading.”

Al Fares coincides with other major international equine shows, including some of the biggest shows in Europe. Mbayed assured that many French companies have opted to be at Al Fares, on the eve of the start of ‘Racing at Meydan’ season that kicks off on November 6.

Mbayed added: “Al Fares 2014 is well-timed to coincide with major local racing events. For example, more than 344 horse riders will be participating in Al Wathba Endurance race on October 30.”

Al Fares Dubai 2014 will highlight new products and services for horses and riders. The expo will see horse owners, trainers, chiefs of the equine industry, renowned jockeys, polo professionals and horse lovers from across the world converging on Dubai. – TradeArabia News Service
