Batelco warns over scam emails
MANAMA, July 27, 2016
Batelco, Bahrain's leading telecom company, has issued a warning to its customers to be on the alert over fraudulent emails.
A number of Batelco customers have reported receiving emails which appears to come from someone they know, asking them to transfer money or open an attachment, the company said.
"This type of targeted scam email is known as spear phishing, where the sender has access to personal details such as the names and work roles of those who are targeted. The inclusion of such information makes the emails look very realistic and a number of people have transferred money believing they are sending it to help a friend in need," said a statement.
Batelco chief operating officer Abderrahmane Mounir advised customers that in order to avoid phishing scams, everyone should be suspicious of any email message that asks them to click on a link and enter or verify personal information.
“Also, customers should be suspicious of any email which asks them to transfer money even if it appears to be from a friend or colleague. It is highly recommended to make direct contact with the person who appears to have sent the email and check with them before taking any action,” he added. - TradeArabia News Service
