Plane with 64 collides mid-air with helicopter in Washington DC

WASHINGTON, 20 days ago

An American Airlines flight carrying 60 passengers and four crew members has collided in mid-air with a helicopter in Washington DC, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said.

The plane crashed in the Potomac River, which weaves through DC, according to the DC Fire and EMS Department.

Three US Army soldiers were on board the military helicopter, said a BBC report.

Police divers and boats are searching the water for survivors, while US authorities are investigating.

"A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 pm local time," the FAA statement said.

"PSA was operating as Flight 5342 for American Airlines. It departed from Wichita, Kansas. The FAA and NTSB will investigate," it added.

US President Donald Trump says he has been briefed on the "terrible accident" and thanks emergency responders for their "incredible work".
