Huawei official receiving the recognition at the summit

Huawei recognised for contribution to 5G development

DUBAI, July 8, 2015

Huawei, a leading information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has been recognised for making the ‘Biggest Contribution to 5G Development’ at the recently held 5G World Summit 2015 in Netherlands.

The fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology is expected to become a critical infrastructure in a super-connected world, supporting 1,000-fold gains in network capacity and providing the necessary backbone for future Smart City projects in the Middle East, said a statement.

With the rapid development of mobile broadband and the Internet of Things, the massive number of oncoming connections between people and machines will quickly begin to blur the boundary between the physical world and the digital world, it said.

While the standardisation of 5G will begin next year, 5G technology has been a hot industry topic for quite some time.

Within the Middle East, Huawei has partnered with leading groups to jointly showcase the future of 5G mobile broadband services to the public.

The company has already signed a memorandum of understanding to explore super-speed 5G broadband services with one of the region’s leading telecom operators.

Huawei is also working with operators to trial and implement 4.5G services over the coming years—an important bridge between today’s 4G LTE networks and the 5G era.

Chaobin Yang, chief marketing officer, Huawei Wireless Product Line, said: “Since we started 5G research in 2009, Huawei has achieved significant breakthroughs in end-to-end 5G system innovation, including new air interface technologies and new architectures.

“We promise to continue our efforts towards contributing to a globally unified standard and achieving a win-win industry chain in close collaboration with the whole industry."

Dimitris Mavrakis, principal analyst at Ovum, said: "Huawei is spending considerable effort and funds for 5G and is making significant advances in R&D, particularly in air interface and test bed developments. This award recognises Huawei's continuous efforts for innovation and R&D excellence and acknowledges the vendor's standardisation activities."

The major challenge with 5G today is determining how to achieve the vision of 10Gbps throughput, 1ms latency and capacity for 100 billion device connections, said the statement.

With its extensive experience in 2G, 3G and 4G solutions and now with ambitious 5G research underway, Huawei was able to win the first 5G award in the industry, it said.

In the academic field, Huawei has contributed over 180 papers on 5G in close collaboration with leading universities such as New York University and Harvard University. The firm also also plays an important role in many standard organisations and industry alliances such as 5GPPP, IMT2020, 5GIC, 5GMF and NGMN, defining 5G together with all industry partners. - TradeArabia News Service
