Dubai public transport pass to cost $73 a month

Dubai, August 31, 2009

The cost of a monthly public transport pass for riding the Dubai Metro, local buses and using the water transit will be Dh270 ($73.40) per month, says a report.

A 30-day Nol pass will allow unlimited use of all public transport in Dubai, said the report in the Gulf News.

Travelling by Metro and othe rpublic transport will be much more economical than owning a car, said the report.

A study conducted by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said that maintaining a new car – including servicing, fuel and depreciation – would cost up to an average of Dh68 per day, Dh476 per week and Dh2,040 per month.

The daily public transport pass will cost Dh14 for unlimited trips in the city via any mode of transport, said the report.

Dubai loses annually about Dh4.5 billion due to traffic congestion, the RTA report said. Public transport will decrease this loss and help commuters save time by avoiding being stuck in traffic jams, added the report.
