Robotic surgery ‘future of orthopaedic treatment’

Techniques like robotic orthopaedic surgeries, which help reduce human errors, provide quicker recovery times for patients, experts said at a recent conference in Dubai, UAE, focusing on the next evolution in the field of orthopaedics.

Titled “An Orthopaedic Update”, Aster DM Healthcare’s fourth edition of Synerge International Medical Conference highlighted the next evolution in orthopaedics --- robotics, computer-assisted surgeries, navigation devices and software for selection of the right implants which have already landed in the armaments of orthopaedic surgeons globally.

Aster Medcity-Kochi, the quaternary care hospital under Aster DM Healthcare in Kerala-India, offers the advanced robotic surgery by a specialized Minimal Access Robotic Surgery (MARS) team.

Presenting his paper at the conference, Dr Ranjith Narayan, specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery at Aster Hospital-Mankhool in Dubai, said: “Robotic surgery has opened up new avenues in the near future in surgical practice. As medicine and surgical techniques are evolving and still developing, we can see more of these advancements moving from research centres into the hands of doctors all over the world in the near future.”

“The most advanced surgery technique in the orthopaedic filed ensures greater accuracy and produce consistent results.  Instead of using the surgery instruments by hand, robotic arms are used and controlled by efficient surgeons with the help of advanced computers. The procedure replicates the surgeon’s exact movements on the master controls onto robotic instruments in the patient,” he added.

“The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved robotics are available for surgeons to perform advanced surgeries such as total hip and knee replacement in complex cases,” Dr Narayan explained.

“There are several specific areas of the body, where the use of robot-assisted orthopaedic surgery is more effective as the massive long bones associated with the joints are easy for robots to attach to. There are many advantages of robot-assisted orthopaedic surgery.

“The robot can be securely attached to rigid bone structures, as the bone is a dense structure which is easy to be scanned by the robot. Bone can also be easily manipulated and fixed into position, and robot devices are capable of producing high energy forces needed for orthopaedic surgery,” he added.

The Aster Synerge Conference presented research discussions on the latest developments to enlighten the professionals on improving their surgical and therapeutic skills. A panel of globally-renowned experts delivered lectures on various orthopaedic-related topics as well as rare and special surgical procedures.

The topics presented at the Conference include ‘An evidence-based approach for neck pain and disc disease’, ‘Low back ache-the surgical solution’ and ‘Femoral shaft fractures in children’, ‘An update on Osteoarthritis’, ‘Ankle injuries and its modality of treatment’, ‘Evolution of ACL reconstruction’, ‘Decision-making in anterior chronic shoulder instability’ and ‘Principles of mobile bearing unicondylar knee arthroplasty’, and ‘New trends in management of bone tumour’.
