To prevent an overflow following the plant shutdown, truckloads of waste are
being removed from the area

Trucks to be used for waste disposal in Bahrain development

MANAMA, February 27, 2015

Up to 20 truckloads of human waste will have to be hauled off every day from a set of luxury housing developments in the Riffa area in Bahrain to prevent sewage flooding the streets.

The Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication, reported yesterday (February 26) that a wastewater treatment plant serving Riffa Views, the Royal Golf Club and Awali had shut down due to an alleged default on payments.

Handling up to 18,000 cu m of raw sewage a day, the Metito plant in Riffa Views has now stopped receiving waste and will be winding down its operations in the coming days.

However, Riffa Views managing director Yasser Al Raee told the GDN that the sewage will be trucked to the wastewater treatment plant at Tubli Water Pollution Control Centre until a more permanent solution can be found.

“This is the second time this has happened,” he said.

“We were heading towards an agreement with Metito, but that fell through.

“The good thing is that the community is under control and we have another solution for the sewage in the meanwhile.

“We will be trucking the wastewater out to the Tubli facility so there should be no overflow.'

Al Raee admitted that having an additional 15 to 20 trucks a day for transporting sewage was 'very expensive' and 'not very sustainable', but stressed that a more permanent solution would soon be found.

He added that the majority of treated water is used for irrigation of the golf course and the greenery of Riffa Views, but due to the recent cool weather little immediate effect should be seen from the plant shutting down.

As the closed treatment facility is owned by Metito, it cannot be run by any other company, but Al Raee said that the management was working on a proposition to take it over.

In a statement, Metito asked any residents concerned by the plant shutdown to contact the Royal Golf Club or Riffa Views community management.

In addition to an alleged default on millions of dinars worth of payments, the company also claims that many contracts it has signed have not been honoured. - TradeArabia News Service
