Philips, Dubai Municipality win Future Cities award

DUBAI, December 15, 2016

Philips Lighting, a global leader in lighting products, systems and services, together with government partner Dubai Municipality was recently honoured with the ‘Best Government-Private Sector Initiative’ accolade at the Future Cities Awards.

The recognition is the result of a unique collaboration between Philips Lighting and Dubai Municipality for the Dubai Lamp, which is the world’s first commercially available 200 lumen per watt LED (light-emitting diode) lamp in a range of four lamps that are most commonly used in homes, consuming only 1, 2, and 3 watt, said a statement from Philips Lighting.

According to Dubai Municipality, two million Dubai Lamps will be supplied for residential and professional use across the city by the end of next year and with the support of Philips Lighting the long-term plan is to replace 10 million lamps in Dubai by 2020, said a statement.

Such a transformation in lighting solutions across households and enterprises can reduce energy used for lighting by up to 90 per cent, contributing to a more sustainable world for future generations, it said.

Sameer Mohammed Abdul Rahman, foreign affairs, partnership department, Dubai Municipality, received the award along with Bram Lansink, head of marketing, Philips Lighting Middle East and Turkey.

Lansink said: “At our company we honour our long-term partnerships with the Dubai government by delivering exceptional results on energy savings and quality performance thanks to our world class lighting solutions.”

“Today we celebrate hand in hand with our partner Dubai Municipality, another success that not only makes us proud but also raises the bar for our future projects as it reaffirms the common vision shared with the UAE government and serves as a reminder of our commitment and active role towards smart and sustainable cities and a high standard of living for future generations,” he added.

Earlier this year, Philips Lighting announced the launch of its new global five-year sustainability programme, ‘Brighter Lives, Better World’, aspiring to create a better world where customers can reduce their electricity use by up to 80 per cent by accelerating the shift to energy-efficient LED and connected lighting systems, it said.

The Dubai Lamp Initiative is part of the company's broader goal and vision to raise public awareness of the need for energy saving and for reduction of carbon emissions and is in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy which targets a 30 per cent reduction in energy consumption by 2030, it stated. – TradeArabia News Service
