The GCC states are studying the possibility of establishing a regional water interconnection network and expanding their existing electricity interconnection system to strengthen resource security and ensure the continuity of essential services, said its Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi.
The proposals were discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the GCC Electricity and Water Cooperation Committee, held via video conferencing. It was chaired by Bahrain's Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs Yaser bin Ebrahim Humaidan.
Albudaiwi said closer integration in the electricity and water sectors was a strategic priority for strengthening the security and development of member states, particularly amid rapid regional developments.
He said bolstering Gulf integration in the electricity and water sectors represents one of the strategic pillars for consolidating the security of the GCC states and the sustainability of their development.
The GCC Secretary General pointed out that the drive towards cementing the Gulf electrical interconnection system and studying the possibility of establishing a water interconnection project among the member states reflects the shared vision of the leaders of the GCC states towards building an integrated Gulf system that is more prepared and efficient in confronting regional variables and developments.
He highlighted the rapid developments witnessed by the region and underlined the significance of upgrading the levels of Gulf co-ordination and integration in managing vital resources, enhancing the readiness of infrastructure, and raising its efficiency and capacity to deal with various circumstances.
He affirmed that joint Gulf action in these two sectors constitutes a critical pathway to bolstering the security and stability of the GCC states and supporting their ability to steadfastly and sustainably continue their developmental trajectory.
Albudaiwi said the initiatives followed directives issued by GCC leaders at their 19th Consultative Meeting in Jeddah in April to strengthen cooperation and integration in strategic sectors.
The meeting reviewed the findings of technical studies on potential water interconnection projects and measures to enhance the Gulf electrical interconnection system. The studies were prepared in coordination with member states, relevant authorities and specialised consultants, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
