MPs seek to turn Bahrain's ice cream heritage into tourist attraction

Bahrain could soon be exploring a whole new flavour of family entertainment, with a proposed ice cream museum offering visitors a colourful world of frozen treats, playful installations and picture-perfect backdrops.

A proposal by five MPs, led by Parliament’s financial and economic affairs committee chairman Ahmed Al Salloom, calls for a Bahraini variation of the popular ice cream museum concept, with Awal Dairy emerging as a potential frontrunner able to lick the opposition, reported GDN, our sister publication.

Al Salloom, who is also Bahrain Chamber treasurer, believes the company would be an ideal candidate, given its long-standing presence in the sector.

Established in 1963, Awal Dairy is the second-oldest dairy company in the region after Kuwait’s KDD, established just 12 months earlier.

“Bahrain has the opportunity to introduce a distinctive attraction that combines entertainment, investment and local industry,” said Al Salloom. “Awal Dairy has a long history in the kingdom and the region, and we believe it would be an ideal frontrunner to explore how this concept could be developed into something that appeals to families and visitors.”

The idea goes way beyond displaying ice cream making behind glass displays. International attractions such as Miami’s Museum of Ice Cream turn the familiar dessert into an immersive experience, combining themed rooms, interactive play areas, tasting stations and colourful settings designed to delight children and adults alike.

“If developed, the attraction could combine interactive exhibits and tasting experiences with the story of ice cream production, while creating opportunities for local businesses in food, retail and tourism,” said Al Salloom.
