WSP plays vital role in delivering UAE passenger rail network project

As Etihad Rail passenger services arrive in Dubai, WSP, a world-leading engineering and professional services consulting firm, is celebrating its contribution to one of the UAE's most significant transport infrastructure programmes, helping create new connections between communities, businesses and economic centres across the emirates.

Working alongside Etihad Rail and its delivery partners, the company delivered the detailed design for 334 km of railway infrastructure between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, encompassing more than 200 structures and over 500 utility diversions. The scope included major expressway crossings across both emirates, connections to Jebel Ali and Khalifa ports, and complex rail and civil infrastructure.

The launch of passenger services marks a major milestone in the UAE's transport journey, providing residents and visitors with a new way to travel between the country's key centres while supporting wider economic growth and connectivity.

"The completion of this route is a significant achievement, made possible through close collaboration with multiple stakeholders across Abu Dhabi and Dubai to deliver a highly complex infrastructure programme," said Alan Caldwell, the Managing Director of Transport & Infrastructure at WSP Middle East.

"By connecting the emirates through passenger rail, the project will create new opportunities for residents and businesses while supporting the UAE's long-term growth and development. We are proud to have played a role in bringing this vision to life," he stated.

While the arrival of passenger services marks an important milestone, it also highlights the complexity of delivering major rail programmes and the critical role of stakeholder alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

Large-scale rail projects involve numerous interfaces between transport authorities, infrastructure owners, delivery teams, contractors and utility providers. Successfully managing these relationships is often one of the greatest challenges in programme delivery, requiring clear governance, defined responsibilities and strong collaboration across all stakeholders.

Drawing on its experience supporting major rail programmes globally, WSP advocates a proactive approach to interface management, helping delivery teams identify risks, improve coordination and maintain confidence throughout the programme lifecycle.

According to WSP, early stakeholder engagement and transparent decision-making are essential to ensuring that complex infrastructure programmes remain aligned with their objectives, schedules and long-term outcomes.

As governments across the Middle East continue investing in rail and integrated transport networks, the successful delivery of projects at this scale will increasingly depend on effective stakeholder coordination, interface management and a shared vision between all parties involved.

The Abu Dhabi to Dubai route demonstrates how rail infrastructure can do more than connect destinations. By linking communities, employment centres, ports and strategic assets, it helps create the foundations for future economic growth while giving people and businesses new ways to connect across the UAE.-TradeArabia News Service
