Equinor, Aker BP and Vår Energi are forming a strategic exploration partnership to target some of the largest remaining opportunities on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), aiming to unlock major discoveries that could support new standalone field developments.

Under the agreement, the companies will combine expertise, data, technology and exploration capacity to pursue high-impact prospects.

Over the next four to five years, they plan to mature and test a portfolio of around 20–25 opportunities, with an ambition to drill about five high-impact exploration wells annually.

Most recent NCS discoveries have been made near existing infrastructure, where resources can be developed through subsea tiebacks.

While such near-field exploration will remain important for sustaining existing production, the companies say larger discoveries are increasingly needed to underpin new standalone developments.

Many of these prospects involve greater geological uncertainty, technical complexity and investment requirements, making partnerships harder to establish.

By sharing risks and combining capabilities, the three companies expect to pursue more high-impact opportunities than they could independently.

Major discoveries could strengthen future energy supplies, support Norway’s supplier industry and help maintain the NCS’s role in supplying Europe.
