India’s KP Group eyes $4bn investment in Botswana’s clean energy sector

KP Group, a leading renewable energy company, has signed a MoU with the Government of the Republic of Botswana to collaborate on large-scale renewable energy generation, energy storage, and transmission infrastructure.

The agreement follows the recent visit of President Droupadi Murmu to the African nation, thus reflecting the strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations in clean energy development.

The agreement was signed between Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy and KP Group, comprising KPI Green Energy Limited, KP Energy Limited, and KP Green Engineering Limited.

As per the agreement, KP Group and the Government of Botswana will jointly develop renewable energy and allied infrastructure projects involving an estimated capital investment of Rs360 billion ($4 billion). These projects are expected to add nearly 5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity.

The partnership supports Botswana’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 and marks a significant milestone in KP Group’s international expansion.

The collaboration also includes the development and strengthening of high-voltage transmission infrastructure within Botswana, along with regional interconnections to enhance power reliability and energy security.

As part of the partnership, KP Group will offer 30 scholarships annually to citizens of Botswana to pursue education and skill development in renewable energy, engineering, sustainability and allied fields. This initiative aims to build local capabilities, encourage knowledge transfer, and support long-term workforce development in the clean energy sector.

The MoU signing coincided with another key milestone for the Group, as Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi virtually inaugurated KP Green Engineering’s state-of-the-art fabrication and galvanising facility at Matar in Gujarat.

The latest facility adds over 2.94 lakh metric tonnes of annual production capacity, significantly strengthening KP Green Engineering’s manufacturing capabilities for large-scale renewable energy and transmission projects.

On the collaboration, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Minister of Minerals and Energy, said the partnership would accelerate clean energy deployment while delivering long-term economic and environmental benefits.

Dr Faruk G. Patel, the Founding Promoter of KP Group, said the MoU reflects a shared vision to unlock Botswana’s renewable potential and contribute meaningfully to its net-zero journey.

KP Group currently has a renewable energy portfolio of approximately 6 GW in India and is advancing toward its target of 10GW by 2030, with active interests in green hydrogen, energy storage, and advanced solar solutions, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
