Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah recognised for CSR projects

MUSCAT, October 10, 2017

Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa has received special recognition at the 10th cycle of the prestigious 2017 Arabia CSR Awards in Hospitality sector.

The grand awards function took place in Dubai last month with general manager, Juergen Doerr, and director of engineering, Mohamed Macki, in attendance to represent the five-star luxury resort.

Juergen Doerr, general manager of Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, said: “At Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, we are committed to implementing sustainable practices within the local community through our CSR initiatives. It is a great honour to receive special recognition in the Hospitality sector Category at the Arabia CSR Awards 2017.”

“This recognition is important to all the team in Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa. We understand the 2017 Arabia CSR Awards has been an extremely challenging cycle with a high level of competition amongst participants. To be selected as one of the top three applications of the year is a great achievement for the hotel team,” he said.

Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa supports two corporate social responsibility programmes: Embrace, which is part of Shangri-La’s Care for People, and Sanctuary, the resort’s Turtle Care project in line with the company’s Care for Nature project.

As part of its Embrace programme, Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa has been supporting a local school built for Omani children who are financially less fortunate. Many employees have volunteered to assist and support activities with the school, including purchasing new furniture and repainting the school’s interior walls and installing proper curtains in the classrooms to allow the children to learn in an environment that is more conducive for educating. On many occasions, the resort has invited children of local schools to enjoy playtime at the Adventure Zone recreational facility.

Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa is one of only five turtle nesting sites in all of Oman. The Turtle Care Project aims to protect the endangered hawksbill and green turtles species native to the beaches of the Sultanate. The resort has a dedicated turtle ranger who ensures the nests are sheltered from any threats and his role involves raising awareness amongst guests and local communities on the plight of turtles through educational activities such as daily talks and viewings at the resort’s Eco Centre.

Habiba Al Mar’ashi, president and CEO, Arabia CSR Network, said: “Congratulations to all the winners of this year’s Arabia CSR Awards. We would also like to extend our gratitude to all organizations that submitted their entries to this year’s competition. We are overwhelmed by the turnout this year and we look forward to exceeding this success in the coming years.”

As a global hotel company present in 73 destinations, Shangri-La is committed to implementing sustainable practices in the communities where we operate. Serving as a responsible corporate citizen and being mindful of impact on the environment and society has been instrumental to the group’s success.

Established in 2004, the Arabia CSR Network is a professional multi-stakeholder organisation established in the UAE. It is devoted to advancing the principles and practices of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Arab region.
