A Dubai-bound Air India flight had a narrow escape on Monday as the plane veered off the runway after an engine failure during the take off and suffered a tyre burst at the Kozhikode  (Calicut) airport, a report said.

The pilot of the flight AI-C937 reported trouble in the left engine at 11.35 am just after taxiing and was to take off, when the incident occurred, the airport director was quoted as saying in a Times of India report.

The pilot, however, managed to retain control over the aircraft, the report said.

There were about 190 passengers and crew on the plane.
